Gold Japanese Forest Grass makes a perfect filler at the front of a shaded or partly shaded border, giving a pop of golden color to the garden. Commonly called Hakone grass, it is a spreading, shade-loving, deciduous perennial grass that is native both to moist mountain and woodland areas in central Japan. It typically grows to 14" tall and will spread over time to 18" wide. The yellow-green panicles have a delicate beauty when viewed closely, but are not particularly showy from a distance. Elegant golden-yellow bamboo-like narrow leaves are the key features, and grow in dense, spreading mounds. This compact variety adds color and texture to the garden. In the fall, inflorescence turns a warm red hue.
